Construction has started on a total of 1.5 million square meters at the World Expo 2010 site, an official in charge of the Expo construction said yesterday.
Meanwhile, about 20 kilometers of roads will be finished by the end of this year, said She Zhiping, assistant supervisor of Technical Department of the Construction Headquarters Office of Shanghai World Expo.

Two of 11 joint pavilions have been finished. The other nine pavilions are still under construction and will be completed in the third quarter of next year.
Among 49 national pavilions, the German Pavilion and French Pavilion have already laid the foundation. Designs for another 11 have already been worked out.

Four of 39 pavilions built by the Shanghai Expo Organiser and rented to exhibitors have been completed so far. Another 21 are under construction.
The Shanghai World Expo site will be 5.28 square kilometers between the Nanpu Bridge and Lupu Bridge.
