Syria will duplicate the life and environment of its capital city Damascus at the World Expo 2010, officials said as the Southwest Asian country signed a participation contract with the organizer today.
Syria will spotlight the features and homes of Damascus, one of the most ancient cities in the world with a history going back more than 4,500 years. The theme is "Damascus -- the Oldest Capital Still Inhabited."
Residents of Damascus do not rely on modern science to achieve a better life. Instead they pursue a luxury lifestyle with wisdom, creativity and experience and co-exist with nature harmoniously, officials said, adding that Syria was ready to introduce this experience to the world.
Syria will also participate in Expo Shanghai Online, an online platform of Expo, it confirmed.
Like many other countries, Syria is confronting a series of challenges because of the rapid growth of its population. The country hopes to discuss its experiences and learn from others in this area, said Mohamad Hamold, commissioner general of Syria's Expo participation.
Hong Hao, director of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination, said the Sino-Syrian friendship was developed via the Silk Road, the world's oldest trade route across Asia, and Expo 2010 would certainly serve as a new platform in enhancing understanding and friendly ties between the two sides.
