Date:28/04/2009
Name of Pavilion: Man’s City
Designer: A design team led by Giampaolo Imbrighi
Pavilion Area: Around 6,000 Square Meters
Location: Within Zone C of the Expo Site
Profile: Functional Modules Available for Recombination
Unique Features:

Italy Pavilion will be composed of 20 functional modules, which represent 20 regions in the country respectively. Strolling in the pavilion, visitors may enjoy a combined environment, packed with Shanghai-style alleys and Italian-style plazas.

Highlight 1:
The design of Italy Pavilion is inspired by the children’s game of pick-up sticks, which is known as “Shanghai” in Italy. The pavilion is comprised of functional modules of different shapes, bounded by the jumbled “sticks” dropped by children, which can be reassembled and reconfigured freely as required.
Highlight 2:
Formation of the pavilion will highlight the variety of Italian cities, featuring the narrow streets, courtyards and lanes that lead to open squares and gardens on a sudden. The water elements within the pavilion and natural light will build a comfortable environment for visitors.
Highlight 3:
The structure will be surrounded on three sides by the water jet cutter which means a tool capable of slicing into metal or other materials using a jet of water at high velocity and pressure. It will reflect natural light into the exhibition space. Internal configuration will be created by natural light introduced through the louvers, as a reminder of the narrow lanes in the city squares, which are built with a type of innovative material, known as transparent concrete.
Highlight 4:
The entire pavilion is conceived as a specific “mechanism” with ecoclimate functions and energy store devices. The integrated glass curtain wall with photoelectronic elements can isolate the emission; and building’s light beams can cover all areas within the pavilion, and achieve energy efficiency as well.
