Expo forum calls for low-carbon lifestyle
Date:15/04/2010
An Expo-themed forum was held in Shanghai's Chongming Island yesterday, gathering experts and officials to explore the theme of an ecological city and low-carbon lifestyle.
Scholars shared their ideas in turning Chongming into a modern ecological island and promoting a low-carbon lifestyle. They also discussed the link of "city," "ecology" and "life" in sustainable development of a city.
In January, Chongming unveiled a blueprint for an ecological island where "green" development will harmonize with the island of forests, fields, rivers and wetlands.
The new eco-friendly development plan will strengthen utilization and protection of natural resources, conserve energy, handle agricultural waste with new methods, and use appropriate industry to achieve an economic leap while not causing ecological damage.
As the key construction area of the county, Chenjia Town, where the Changjiang Tunnel-Bridge lands, is ready to boom.
The expanded area will have four sections -- an experimental ecological community with a low-carbon footprint, an international commercial district of 8 square kilometers, a central community and an international education zone.
Chongming will also hold a major international women's cycling event from May 5 to 9, attracting top riders from around the world. It includes two events, a top-rated 2.1 race on May 5-7 and a World Cup race on May 9.
