Congregation prompts audience to act
Date:06/09/2010
The world's first interactive kinetic light installation came to life yesterday at the Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai. This offbeat art form is designed and choreographed for pedestrians.
Congregation, as the piece is called, was created by UK media art group KMA. It transforms a flat piece of ground into a stage with lights and music. The viewers find themselves acting in the set.
The show is part of UK's cultural program for the World Expo and will run through Wednesday. After its world premiere in Shanghai, Congregation will be presented at Bournemouth and at Tate Britain, London.
Congregation is sponsored by the UK Pavilion, the Cultural and Education Section of the British Consulate General, and the Rockbund Art Museum.
KMA, the media art group, was founded by two pioneering artists, Tom Wexler and Kit Monkman. Their highly original interactive work stems from a shared interest in the physical patterns of social behavior and in the use of digital technology as a vehicle for public theatre.
